A cognitive function test examines a person’s mental capabilities to solve arithmetic problems, identifying different patterns and the ability to understand and communicate.
The results of this test provide a comprehensive assessment of a child/student’s ability to reason and his reaction to different challenges.
A cognitive abilities’ examination is specifically designed for children but there are tests available for adults as well.
Attributes and Significance of Cognitive Function Test
A cognitive functions test is somewhat similar to an IQ or a General Test but it covers several aspects of a person’s mental abilities.
While IQ tests and General Tests assess a person’s knowledge from what they have already been taught, a cognitive test for mental abilities goes far beyond that.
It measures not just how knowledgeable a child is but rather how adaptive he/she is to knowledge.
It measures particular mental capabilities such as fast calculations (number series), verbal abilities (understanding language and manipulating information to achieve desired results) and spatial analysis (puzzle solving, 3D image solving).
The test consists of 3 main batteries and each battery has several subsections.
Each battery focuses on a different aspect of a child’s mental ability.
The first battery deals with questions relating to verbal analogies in which the candidates have to solve word problems.
The second battery consists of questions pertaining to mathematical quantities in which the child has to answer number series and different math-related problems.
Finally, the third battery which tests the child’s spatial abilities contains questions in the form of 3D images, illustration, visualizations and puzzles in order for the child to identify and solve a particular problem with the help of spatial analysis in which neither words nor numbers are used.
The main purpose of these ‘Batteries’ is to provide each children a choice.
This means that this test measures a child’s ability to solve problems using verbal, quantitative and nonverbal methods to produce a clear picture of the child’s cognitive abilities.
While some kids might choose to answer questions using words, others might prefer a nonverbal approach or a mathematical approach to provide reasonable answers.
Usually kids who choose the third form of analysis, which is the nonverbal technique, and score reasonably well are considered more mentally capable than others due to the fact that they did not require words or numbers to come up with the correct answers, but only images.
They have the ability to form answers using only spatial visualizations.
Cognitive Function Test and Why It Is Popular
After careful evaluation of each child’s score on each of the three batteries mentioned above, accurate information regarding their performance can be derived which would further determine whether or not a child has the ability to grow as well as identifying the areas where he needs improvement.
It is a fair and unbiased test that can be attempted by any child from any ethnicity, country or background.
A cognitive function test eliminates the language barriers faced by many for whom English is not the first language.
The quantitative and nonverbal batteries can be attempted by children who do not know how to properly identify words in English.
This would prove that a child is performing poorly not due to a lack of ability to absorb knowledge, but rather it is due to the language problems that he is not able to improve his performance.
If he/she does well in the test then it would be certain that the child needs to learn how to read and write in English.
A cognitive assessment test holds a certain edge over other knowledge based tests, it does not directly relate to a student’s ability to do well in the classroom.
Attainment tests designed by school faculty challenge a student’s ability to answer according to what he/she has been a taught a few weeks or a month ago, whereas a cognitive function test taps into that child’s capacity to mentally evolve his/her way of thinking and approaching a problem.
School experience is essential, a child is presupposed to understand what he is going to be dealing with in the test, but his school experience will not determine his score in the cognitive assessment test.
The implementation of complex reasoning tests at schools provides an excellent opportunity for both teachers and parents to recognize their children’s capacity to grow and perform better in the future.
Using the test scores, teachers can build on a student’s weak areas providing him the necessary guidance to overcome those weaknesses and similarly teachers can also identify a student’s strong attributes and provide him the space they need to enhance their abilities.
The cognitive function test scores can be used to determine the standard of teaching that should be applied to gifted students and to those who have plenty of room for improvement. A standardized classroom environment can then be provided for the students.
Why Cognitive Function Test?
Your reasoning capabilities are what help you process information and react to different problems in different circumstances whether at work or at school.
Higher thinking abilities are useful in all stages of life, from day 1 in school to when you land a job in a large corporation.
An improvement in cognitive abilities will mean that you have the ability to understand different problems and to accurately judge and provide a solution for your problems.
If children are taught to hone their cognitive abilities from an early age they will grow up to become talented individuals.
The cognitive function test is one of the very few tests prepared to evaluate an individual’s cognitive abilities.
The test has varying levels of difficulty and was initially designed to assess the mental aptitude in children.
Cognitive assessment tests are also used in the world of medicine in a therapeutic way to determine symptoms pertaining to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
A different form of cognitive function test is also used for the screening of potential candidates who have applied for a particular position at a company.
Employers use these tests to determine how mentally capable a candidate is in performing certain tasks rather than relying on his qualifications only.
